São Bernardo creates urban tree inventory

In addition to encouraging city maintenance, ZUP* allows for the creation and management of inventories. São Bernardo chose tree mapping as its first database. More than 20 thousand trees were catalogued in 500 linear kilometers, with identification of the species, visible health problems, among other characteristics.

Urban Forest Inventory

With ZUP Inventory Manager, the collected data is processed by a team of experts, who perform the geolocation of each tree individual, its quantitative (height, diameter, trunk inclination) and qualitative (identifying species and possible visible tree health problems) analysis.
With the inventory it will be possible to create a triage of trees that need special attention, contributing to the maintenance of the public arboretum, the definition of priorities, and the planning of preventive actions.

Inventory Characteristics

The inventory presents 64 pieces of information about each individual tree, considering its geolocation, the measurements and conditions of the sidewalk, the measurements of the flowerbed, the measurements of the tree (considering height, trunk diameter, trunk inclination, among others); the identification of the context and the interferences that the individual tree presents in relation to power lines; the identification of the family, species, and genus of the trees.

Risk Map

Subsequently, with this data, the system, through an algorithm created from the visual method proposed by Sampaio et al. (2010), based on adaptations of the one developed by Seitz (2006), creates a map indicating which arboreal individuals present visual risks to assist in prioritizing, taking action, and managing the urban forest.
The algorithm also incorporates elements from the methods of the USDA Forest Service, the International Society of Arboriculture (POKORNY, 2003; ISA, 2010), the Visual Tree Assessment System (VTA) (MATTHECK and BRELOER, 1997), and in the protocol developed by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (ÖSTBERG et al., 2012).
All the above methods include many other characters for evaluating the trees, but for this project we have considered those that are possible to visualize through the photos used in this system.

VcSBC wins Governarte 2015

The ZUP system, applied in the city of São Bernardo do Campo under the name VcSBC, was one of the five winning initiatives of the Governarte 2015 competition. VcSBC won the award in the "Cities and Big Data" category, which recognized initiatives that improved people's lives through the use of massive data.

Rio adopts ZUP to inspect services and create social infrastructure inventories
